MCCP is the MUD Client Compression Protocol, which allows the stream of communication from server to client to be compressed using Zlib. This is mostly in use on MUDs, which could run up quite a bandwidth bill in the early days of text-based gaming. Nowadays it is less important, but for games which pay for bandwidth on their hosting, MCCP is still a popular method for reducing overall bandwidth. In some cases, connecting via MCCP will confer various in-game benefits and bonuses upon a player, as a method of social engineering to encourage its use.
